Real Life KM in WorkPlace

Date/Time:

2015-09-12 09:45 to 12:30

Location:

Rm BC303, HK Polytechnic University, Hunghom

For those students who are still studying the MScKM course, they might consider looking for a KM job after graduation.  For those who has graduated might have tried already.  What is the job opportunity of a KM executive or KM manager in Hong Kong?  From our alumni network, there are not too many graduates successfully found a job with a KM title.  Have you ever considered the following questions?

  • What you need to know to qualify as a KM manager apart from the MScKM degree?
  • Why organizations would hire a KM manager?  What is the role of a KM manager in an organization?
  • What authorities you need to have in order to implement and execute KM successfully?  What values can you deliver?
  • If you are lucky to become one of the KM manager in an organization, what results will you deliver, and what plans will you propose and execute to deliver these results?

The KMP2P is happy to be able to invite Mr. Andreas Sher who is one of our MScKM graduates from PolyU, one of the few who works with a formal KM title in 2 different companies in Hong Kong.  He will share his experience and his insights in a KM job.  On top of that, there will be an open discussion so that you can all voice out your queries and concerns, and collaboratively we shall see if we can find the answers together.

If you wish to know how to prepare yourself in order to grab the opportunity of a KM position and become a KM professional, this might give you some mind-opening suggestions.  Be prepared with your most important questions in mind before coming to this event, and meet with your fellow alumni, and explore our future together as KM professional.

Review:

Big thank to Mr. Andreas Sher, our guest speaker, for sharing his interesting working experience in KM field. The event was well received, followed by a special birthday "episode" and inspiring group discussion. Meanwhile, thanks all the participants and also POLYU KMIRC for giving the generous support to our CoP ecosystem.

Schedule

This is what the speaker will share with us during this workshop:

Will the real KM Manager please stand up!  Can Knowledge Management be a standalone discipline within an organization?

There are very few job positions in the market today with the words "Knowledge Management" in their titles.  A quick online search in the job market will flag a variety of different roles and industries.  It is well known that knowledge management still suffers from a case of "identity crisis", but can this explain the lack of positions for a Knowledge Manager?   Can knowledge management be a separate function within an organization or does it require inside knowledge of both the industry and the culture of the particular organization?

Speakers

Andreas Sher

Andreas' interest in managing common information and identifying and connecting subject matter experts started when he was requested to set up an intranet with information for several international offices.  It took several years to discover the term Knowledge Management upon which he quickly enrolled in a Master's course on the subject.  Subsequently he worked with the MTR's Projects Division working on innovation.  He is currently Knowledge Management Director at Pico, an exhibition and event management company.
